It was a quiet night as we parked in the semi-deserted parking lot. The neon sign reading “On the Rox” illuminated the pavement as we made our way in. Avery Kyle- the best Karaoke host in town- greeted us at the door as he was starting to bring in the gear for tonight karaoke show.

The bar was fairly calm - most people recuperating from New Years Eve parting. There were bar stool type seating all over the place and a medium sized dance floor. A few tables were filled with people; the biggest group was across from the karaoke stage- about 7 people were there, the table filled with grub and drink.

We ordered our drinks and sat at a table near the dance floor which hosted the karaoke stage. I took in the scene…

It was definitely a sports bar as it was lined with 32 inch TV’s in panoramic fashion showing 5 different games going on simultaneously. (Insert)

A drink or two later Avery approached us and welcomed us- apologizing for the wait due to the football game going into overtime. Shots on him!

We went out to smoke and there was an older gentleman outside as well cracking jokes that undermined his age of 50- seeming more in his late 30’s. Cussing like a sailor, honest and fun…Jerry was a pretty cool ‘dude’ to chat with. We discussed the different bars in the area and the different type of people that navigate to them.

Time to go in, I was up to sing…the usual 80’s arraignment such as Pat Benatar -I chose Whitney Houston’s ‘ How will I know’. A bit off pitch but having fun, everyone was drunk or tipsy anyways; it was a great song to start the night off with.

There were some really great singers on the stage, singing a variety of different song. Jerry went up and sang his heart out on some old timey song. Avery Kyle, the best backup dancer and sing-along wingman to accompany the shy or the songs needing a counterpart.

ScottieD in good company jamming with me to the great songs being played, recorded a few videos as I went up to the stage and eventually sang the last song with me, “Love Shack”.

A few songs, a few drinks later and it was almost 1 am; time to get home as we both had to work in the am. Saying a farewell to Avery and Jerry we left for the night.

Another great story….great people and great experience.
